What we found
How people make a living with singing bowls, and what applies around Colfax. Every number here was read on October 10, 2026, off the page it links to. Prices are single real examples, not averages.
What sessions cost near you
- Auburn: $15 a class. Studio Be holds sound sessions on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings, and its Meetup group has 564 members. Source
- Nevada City: $20 for a 90-minute sound bath at Inner Path Yoga in January 2025. Source
- Colfax: nobody yet. We found no sound bath listed in Colfax, Meadow Vista, Applegate, Weimar or Foresthill on the web, Eventbrite or Meetup. We did not search Facebook.
Where the money is
Open sessions are the cheap seat. Private and workplace bookings pay several times more for the same hour.
- A private group of up to six: from $450 for an hour, $575 for ninety minutes. Bigger groups $650 to $800. A couple: $250. That is one practitioner in Traverse City, Michigan. Source
- One to one: $250, or $220 each in a set of four. That is a practitioner in Santa Barbara, who also charges $35 a person at open sessions and $65 a person at workplaces. Source
- A workplace hour: $650 to $1,000, by practitioners' own reports on a forum. One with two decades in Chicago says they get less. Source
- Yoga studios either split the door, with the player keeping 50 to 70 percent, or pay a flat $100 to $400 a class. Same forum thread.
- A resort charges its guests $60 each for a sound bath run by an outside practitioner. Source
How sessions fill
- Play where a crowd already is. Practitioners say the usual start is a yoga studio or wellness space that has its own people, and their own events come later. Source
- Eventbrite sends strangers. A London organiser gets one ticket in five from Eventbrite's own search, and its "3 for 2" offers bring 40 percent of sales, because people bring friends. Eventbrite wrote that story about itself. Source
- Airbnb Experiences. A host in Sandpoint, Idaho has 1,200 ratings at 4.94 and was sold out when we looked. Another host says Airbnb keeps 20 percent, and that bookings went up anyway. Source
- Meetup. A group in Eugene, Oregon has 1,258 members and has held 105 sessions, all by donation. Source
- An email list is the one audience you own. The London organiser calls its newsletter its main channel.
- Social media helps, but we found nobody it pays by itself. One YouTube creator says ad money is too uneven to live on. Source
How people live on it
On the forum, most say they do this part time. One, four years in, says full time takes several things together: open sessions, private bookings and teaching. Source
The rules where you play
- Colfax city parks. The park rules cover traffic, animals, glass and hours, 7 AM to 10 PM. They say nothing about playing music or taking donations. Source
- An announced event on city property goes through the city's event form: apply at least 30 days ahead, carry $1 million of liability insurance naming the city, leave a $100 refundable deposit, and wait for approval before advertising. The form does not say how small a gathering counts, so it is worth one call to City Hall: (530) 346-2313. Source
- Business license. Colfax requires one for any business in the city. Source
- The river canyons are state park land: no selling, and no asking for money, without the park's permission. Source
- Tahoe National Forest. Charging any fee needs a permit, which takes 5 percent. A free gathering needs one only above 75 people. Source
- Grass Valley parks. More than 50 people needs an event permit. Source
Insurance and promises
- Insurance for sound work is sold at $169 a year for part-timers, with $2 million of cover per claim. Colfax's event form asks for $1 million. Source
- Don't promise healing. U.S. advertising rules want scientific proof behind a health claim, and a happy customer's story does not count as proof. The guidance is written for products, and the same thinking is the safe line for sessions: call it rest and relaxation, and say it is not medical treatment. Source
A sensible order
This part is our suggestion, not something a source says.
- Pick two or three places nearby that already have people, such as a studio, a farm or a winery, and offer to play there.
- Open sessions near you go for $15 to $20, so let private groups and special settings carry the income.
- Record one session well. It becomes the gift for joining your email list.
- Collect emails at every session.
- Call City Hall before announcing anything in a Colfax park.
